My Boomer Tips

I have a friend. He is just like a little brother to me. His dad passed away a few years ago and for the last two years I have been trying my very best to take care of him. I devote a lot of my energy, time and money to this little kid. He is now 18 years old. I'm 26. There are so many things that we did together, we went on many trips together, we went to a lot of museums, we went snowboarding, car racing, and alot of things. He never paid for any of it. For his 18th birthday, I got an iphone for him. He said he would pay every month for the phone bill. It's been 9 months since I got him the phone, he only paid once. He has two jobs now working at the mall. But he hardly pays for anything. He recently got a car. His grandmother, aunts and uncles gave him some money and he asked for 00 and I gave it to him. He said he would pay me back, but he never did. Not long after he got his car, he had to change his timing belt. He asked me to help him pay for it. It cost 0. He told me he would pay 0 but he never did. Last time he left his keys in the car and had me pay , said he would pay me back but never did. On my birthday he just drove me to work and didn't said almost nothing to me in the car. When I told him how I was feeling and how I felt like he doesn't even care about me. He would tell me that he does care. A week later he got me a card that said he loves me very very much and than got me a new ipod. But he only paid half for it becasue his sister paid for the other half. Later on I found out his sister paid for the whole thing and he never paid her the other half. We would have dinner at least once every week but he has only paid for maybe three or four times even though he has two jobs now. Last week, he asked me for because he said he ran out of money. He said he bought a lot of gifts for people. So I ended up giving him another . He never calls or text me to see how I am doing. Even though I always text him to see how he is doing. Although I introduce him to friends, co-workers and even my family as my brother, I have never heard him introduce me to his friends, his family as his brother. I added him on facebook a month ago. For some reason he wouldn't add me. When I asked him about, he would just say he is too busy or too lazy. But it only takes 5 seconds to go online and add me. He hardly ever tells me what he talks about with his co-workers and his friends. Even when I ask him about it, he would always just say, " random stuff." This has made me just feel very sad and like he is just using me. Please give me some advice and guidance. I am so confused.

Do we need the influx of illegal immigrants to supplant the rapidly aging Baby Boom population?

My Boomer Tips

I have been told that as the millions of Baby Boomers age, the United States may face a lack of labor, leading us to outsource even MORE of our work to other nations--some, namely China, which don't necessarily have our best interests at heart. The immigrant population is needed to keep these jobs in the United States, for our economy and our society. Do you think so? Or have I heard incorrectly?

Why was the government so contemptuous of the baby boomer generation?

My Boomer Tips

They had the statistics for many years as to number of people who would need the social security they paid into their whole lives. Why is it that when this point in time has arrived that jobs for generation X and those younger are now not there to pay the tax base needed to fulfill government obligations to the boomers?

Are baby boomers the worst American generation?

My Boomer Tips

Seriously, what have the baby boomers given the country? WW2 generation defeated Imperialism and Nazism. They made America the most powerful country in human history.

The baby boomers however are going to leave a country in ruins. + trillion in national debt. Jobs are gone. We are now in 3 wars that appear to have no end in sight. Social Security and Medicare will be bankrupt in 2037... These people seem to embrace communism and socialism since the 1960s.

The baby boomers will leave this country in financial ruin....

A question for people from Generation X or Y: What is your opinion of Baby Boomers?

My Boomer Tips

Many of them seem to be too confrontational or too competitive, as if they have to "prove something" all of the time, or try to "out-do" generation Xers, which causes them to give up or try less than their parents. I'm 36, and I can think of numerous times when I would try to befriend or have a pleasant conversation with baby boomer men, and their replies were often a predictable sarcastic response, such as, "Ha!, you weren't even born back when this happened" (in a less than kind, non-joking tone), and things like "Our music, our cars, etc, were better." Yet, I tend to get along just fine with people born in the Silent Generation, because even though many of them were competitive, they treated each other, including younger people, with a bit more class and dignity.

As a person born in 1975, I have really grown tired of Baby Boomers trying to pick generational fights with their offspring. I despise being told how we are less productive, when it was their generation that exported all of our quality factory jobs, shunned the true classical works of music and art, and became the impetus of the modern-day drug epidemic. Many of them are never satisfied with life as it is, and try to force their will upon the masses rather than letting people and things live and be as they are.

Does anyone else feel this way, too, sometimes?

Single Mom. 50 years old. Just laidoff due to job elimination. What should I do?

OK. This really sucks. I am still in shock. Myself and 6 others in my dept. were told yesterday that due to budget cutbacks etc., that our positions had been eliminated. We were also told that 100 more employees will lose their jobs by years end as well.

I had been with the company for 11 years. Had a great paying position as an IT Appl Dev Specialist. Just turned 50 and was looking forward to retirement. I will lose my health insurance and my pension. I think this is very, very unfair. I have 60 days to find another job either inside the company or out. If I don't find a job that pays at least 80% of what I make now then the company will give me severance pay.

One question I have right now is:
Can I get unemployment pay along with my severance pay? I live in Ohio. If so, how long and how much?

Who is going to hire a 50 year old woman?

This is just so not right. I was a dedicated, hard working employee.

:(
